What is adulterated or contaminated food? 

As per Section 2(A) of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, food can be adulterated if :

• Any health-related product that can cause injury to the user’s health
• It is processed such that it affects the user’s health adversely
• A cheaper substitute has been added to it, which adversely affects the user’s health
• Any product used for its manufacture has abstracted to affect the user, compromising its quality adversely

How to File a Food Complaint 

In the consumer forum, you may file a food complaint in:

• Food manufacturer/ Hotel / Restaurant / Shopkeeper
• Local Health Authority of that area / Food Safety Authority’s district commissioner 
• Consumer Forum

If found guilty, the entity or individual must pay a fine of 2 lakh – 10 lakh rupees. However, it is not easy to file a food complaint, and the process of getting justice is time-consuming.
