01 Aug, 2025
The Delhi High Court condemned the outraging of a woman judicial officer’s modesty during court proceedings, calling it an attack on judicial decorum and institutional integrity. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma stated such acts cause injustice to justice itself. Upholding the conviction of lawyer Sanjay Rathore, who threatened and abused a female judge in court, the Court emphasized that the law must protect the voice of justice.
Rathore appeared intoxicated before the judge in Karkardooma Court on October 30, 2015, angry over his case being adjourned. He threatened the judge, banged the table, refused to leave when ordered, and ran out making vulgar remarks. Despite attempts by the Karkardooma Bar leaders to settle the matter informally, the judge refused.
Rathore was convicted under multiple IPC provisions and sentenced to two years in prison. The High Court upheld the conviction but ruled the sentence run concurrently, ordering Rathore to surrender within 15 days to serve the remaining term. No leniency was granted.
