Import Export Code is required for trading products and services to or from India. The IEC is a 10 digit number issued by Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Govt. of India.
Once an Import Export Code is allotted to an applicant, it will be valid for lifetime.
Any person or business entity dealing with international trade of import or export of products and services must register for IEC.
Though Import Export Code is not a tax registration, certain customs duty might be levied and it depends on the product.
Anyone who is a sole proprietor of an Import Export Business, can acquire Import Export Code registration.
