When you apply for GST registration online successfully, you will get an Application Reference Number (ARN). This is the most vital number that helps check GST registration status online through the government portal.

There are other processes too for checking the status of GST registration. This blog will inform you of the details and help you clear out the queries of your mind. So, let’s carry on.

What is an ARN?

ARN is the application reference number that you will get after the successful submission of the GST registration form with all required documents. This number is essential to checking the status of your application.

How do you check the GST registration status through ARN?

Through the ARN, you can easily track the GST registration status. You have to visit the government GST portal to check the status of the application.

The process you may follow:

  • Visit the government portal for GST registration
  • Click on the “Services” tab
  • Under the service tab, you will get GST registration “Track Application Stratus.”
  • After clicking on “Track Application Stratus”, you will get “Module” with a niche
  • There you will get “Refunds” or “Registration”
  • You have to select “Registration”
  • Instantly, you will get another niche with ARN
  • This time, you have to put your ARN
  • And then click on “Search”
  • If you put the wrong ARN, you will get a pop-up with “The ARN is invalid. Please enter a valid ARN”
  • A successful submission will show the status of your application.

You can also click on the link given above and check the GST registration status through the ARN number. You have to keep in mind that space or special character is not acceptable there.

You may receive various types of GST registration status. Some of them are mentioned below with their meanings.

What does GST registration status indicate?

The GST registration status would have the following variations:

  1. Provisional status
  2. Pending for verification
  3. Validation against error
  4. Migrated status
  5. Cancelled status

What are the meanings of all these statuses?

If we decode the status of each stage, you will get the following meanings. Let’s see:

Provisional status

This means that you have submitted the application, and it is at the very initiative stage. There has been no action taken based on your application. So. Your application is in the provisional stage.

Pending for verification

This status shows that your application has been submitted and is forwarded for verification, but it has yet to be done. So, you have to wait for further results.

Validation against error

This status indicates that the details of PAN do not match the other documents you have submitted. If you notice this status, you have to take immediate action on the document mismatch. Otherwise, your application will be rejected by the specific department of the Government of India.

Migrated GST registration status

This status indicates something good for your application. You can submit everything successfully, and there is no mismatch of documents. The application is verified, and everything is all right. You can expect a GST registration certificate soon, as per the terms and conditions of the government. Stay confident!

Cancelled status

You must have understood that a canceled status means that your application is somehow canceled. It does not fulfill the terms and conditions of the GST department. So, the department canceled your application.

Based on the ARN search, you will receive the above-mentioned status. Plan the next action as per the status. If you are in the provision or migration stage, you need to think a little. However, the provision period does not mean any fruitful result except for waiting. All other statuses need to take action immediately. When you get the GST number, you will be able to check the status of your income tax and related returns for your business. You can also apply for GST returns as well.

Disclaimer:

You can check the GST registration status through the ARN. An ARN status indicates the status of your application. The process is described based on the government portal. If the process is changed at any time, it may not work.

What is GSTIN used for?

The Indian government inaugurated the Goods and Services Tax in 2017 by replacing the previous act of VAT (Value Added Tax). The intention of the government behind it is to simplify the taxation system and bring all taxation services under one roof. GSTIN stands for Goods and Services Tax Identification Number. This replaces the previous TIN, or Tax Identification Number.

What does GSTIN look like?

  • GSTIN is a 15-digit number built with PAN and location-based letters and numbers. Let’s analyze them a little.
  • The first two digits stand for the state code based on the census of 2011. Every union territory or state has a unique code. For example, the code of Jammu and Kasmir is 01, Uttar Pradesh is 09, Maharastra is 27.
  • The next 10 digits would be the PAN card of the business house or the PAN number of the taxpayer.
  • The thirteenth digit is the number of registrations with the PAN (first 1-9 and then from A to Z).
  • The 14th digit would be Z by default.
  • The 15th digits would be an alphabet or number. This indicates a check code for detecting errors.

What is the purpose of having a GSTIN?

GSTIN is essential for various reasons, such as:

Having a GSTIN is the compliance of government terms and conditions for your business. Failing to provide GSTIN when the business turnover is 40 lakhs (10 lakhs for hill states) may result in penalties.

If you want to get the facility to Input Tax Credit (ITC) on the taxes of purchased products and expenses, you need GSTIN. You can claim ITC on the GST paid on the goods and services paid on the business.

If you want GST-compliant invoices, you have to mention the number on the invoices you pay to the customers.

To file GST returns and online tax payments, you must have a valid GSTIN. A customer can check it from the government portal by entering the GSTIN number. If it is valid, the portal will show the details of the business and the names of the proprietorship.

Any business must pay taxes online if there is any due for the current cycle of tax payment. You can pay through net banking UPI, debit or credit cards, etc.
