Kolkata has been rocked by a chilling incident at South Calcutta Law College in Kasba, where a 24-year-old female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the campus on June 25. The survivor, who had gone to the college to complete exam-related formalities, was reportedly dragged into the premises by two accused, including Manojit Mishra, as captured on CCTV footage.

According to the police, the assault took place in the college guardroom, a location allegedly frequented by the accused for late-night gatherings. The survivor claimed she was attacked after rejecting a marriage proposal from Mishra, who, along with co-accused Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, allegedly filmed the assault to blackmail her later. A hockey stick used to hit the survivor and the clothing worn by the accused have been seized as evidence.

The investigation has revealed disturbing details, including morphed images of other female students found on Mishra’s phone and a video of the assault, which has been sent for forensic analysis. Police have also identified 17 students who were present on campus during the incident and are being questioned. CCTV footage supports survivor’s testimony in Kasba Law College Rape Case.

Public outrage has intensified, with political parties stepping in. As the investigation unfolds, the case has sparked a broader conversation about institutional accountability and the urgent need for safer educational environments.

The case is currently under active judicial scrutiny, with proceedings unfolding on multiple legal fronts.

Three accused—Monojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay—have been arrested and remanded to police custody until July 1. A fourth individual, the college’s security guard, was also taken into custody following allegations that he failed to intervene or alert authorities during the assault2.

The case is being heard before the Learned Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM), Alipore, where police have sought extended custody to deepen their investigation. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by Kolkata Police to probe the matter, and forensic analysis of seized mobile phones and CCTV footage is underway.

In parallel, three Public Interest Litigations (PILs) have been filed in the Calcutta High Court, demanding a court-monitored investigation. The High Court has agreed to hear these PILs, and notices are expected to be issued to the concerned parties.

Additionally, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a CBI investigation into the incident, citing concerns over impartiality and political interference. The petitioner has also requested victim protection and compensation.

The next few days are likely to be pivotal as both the High Court and the Supreme Court weigh in on the trajectory of the investigation.
