A permanent Account Number is a 10-digit alphanumeric number that is given to each individual who pays taxes and every company conducting financial operations in India. Any tax-paying entity, whether an individual or an organisation, must have a PAN card. Through the UTIITSL or NSDL websites, one can submit an application for a PAN card. Within 45 days of application, the PAN card hardcopy is delivered to the address provided on Form 49A. In addition, one can download e-PAN card online, which can be used everywhere as an identity-proof document.

What Is e-PAN Card?
 

Your physical PAN card is now available in digital format as an e-PAN card. A virtual PAN card that may be used for e-verification is known as an e-PAN card. Your e-PAN, which you can store on your computer or smartphone, will have all your PAN information.

Through the NSDL or UTIITSL portal, you can download an e-PAN. Using your Aadhaar card, you can also instantly download a PAN. The e-PAN card contains the following information on the cardholder:

  • Permanent Account Number
  • Name
  • Father’s Name
  • Gender
  • Date of Birth
  • Photograph
  • Signature 
  • QR code

It is crucial to note that it is unlawful to have more than one PAN card. A fine of up to Rs. 10,000 may be imposed on a person who is found to have more than one PAN card.

What Are Conditions to Apply for an e-PAN Card? 
 

  • A person must be an Indian citizen.
  • He or she must be an individual taxpayer.
  • Must have an Aadhaar card.
  • His or her Aadhaar card details must be up to date.
  • The mobile number must be registered to the Aadhaar card.

How to Download e-PAN Card Using NSDL Portal?
 

Applicants who have applied from the NSDL website have the option to download e-PAN through the NSDL portal. Downloads for any new PAN application or applications for modification are free as long as they are used within 30 days of receiving approval from the income tax department. If not, further fees may remain due. 

 

1. Download e-PAN card (valid for PAN issued within the last 30 days)
 

  • Visit the official website of the TIN-NSDL 
  • Then choose “Download e-PAN card” option(For PAN allotted in the last 30 days)
  • Enter the Captcha code and the Acknowledgement Number
  • Select the “Submit” option 
  • To obtain OTP, choose one of the three methods listed below, an email address; mobile number, or both
  • Click “Generate OTP” after choosing your preferred method of receiving OTP
  • OTP would be received depending on the option selected
  • Type in the OTP and select “Validate”
  • After successful confirmation, select “Download PDF”.

2. Download an electronic PAN card (applicable to PAN issued more than 30 days older)
 

  • Visit the official website of the TIN-NSDL.
  • Then select “Download e-PAN card” (For PAN issued older or more than 30 days)
  • You must provide the following information: PAN, the month and year of birth, GSTN (optional)
  • Click “Submit” option after providing the aforementioned details 
  • You can download an e- PAN card by clicking “Submit” 

Steps to Download e-PAN Card Using UTIITSL
 

UTIITSL is an alternate PAN application portal where applicants can submit their PAN card applications and make rectifications to PAN cards. Online ePAN card downloads are available to applicants who used UTIITLS to submit their applications. There are no additional fees if the e-PAN is downloaded within 30 days of the issue of the PAN card.   

Only the following person can download e-PAN card using UTIITSL
 

  • People who have requested a new PAN through UTIITSL
  • People who have applied for the most recent PAN modification, corrections, or updates through UTIITSL
  • People who have previously registered a working phone number or email address with their PAN record with the Income TAX Department.  

If the applicant successfully downloads e-PAN card using UTIITSL as per the criteria mentioned above, he or she needs to follow the steps given below:

Step 1. Visit the official website of the UTIITSL portal, from where you can download the PAN.

Step 2. Select the “PAN Card Services” option.

Step 3. Provide the following information-

  • PAN Number;
  • Date of Birth/ Incorporation Date/Agreement Date/Date of partnership or trust deed/ Date of formation of BOI / Date of AOP in format MM/YYYY;
  • GSTIN Number (optional);
  • Enter the Captcha.

Step 4. After providing the information mentioned above, click on “Submit”.

Step 5. A link will be delivered to the registered mobile number via SMS and/or email ID upon successful submission. 

Step 6. After receiving the link, the applicant must click it in order to obtain the e-PAN card using the OTP that was sent to their email or mobile device. 

It is crucial to note that only e-PAN cards generated within the last month in response to new PAN applications or requests for changes or corrections are eligible for free download. However, in all other circumstances, the applicant who wishes to obtain the e-PAN from UTIITSL must pay INR 8.26 online for each e-PAN card that is downloaded.

FAQs 

1. How to download an old PAN card by the PAN number?
 

Ans. by using the “Reprint PAN Card” option offered by the Income Tax Department of India from either NSDL or UTIITSL Portal, you can download a duplicate copy of your previous PAN card.

2. Will an e-PAN be accepted as a legal document?
 

Ans. E-PAN cards are equally as valid as regular PAN cards. Although they are distributed in different methods, both are the same document.

3. Can I download a copy of the PAN card online if I lost the original one? 
 

Ans. Yes, you can download the soft copy from the official website of NSDL or UTIITSL if you know the PAN card number. However, duplicate PAN cards can be downloaded using the NSDL Portal, and e-PAN cards can be downloaded by Coupon Number through the UTIITSL.

4. Is there any app for downloading PAN cards?
 

Ans. No, there is no app to download PAN cards. To download e-PAN, one must go to either the NSDL website or the UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited website. However, the Digilocker software allows you to download your PAN.

5. How would I know if my e-PAN generation application has been submitted successfully?
 

Ans. An Acknowledgment ID and a success message will be shown. Please remember the Acknowledgement ID for use in the future. On your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, a copy of your Acknowledgement ID will also be sent to you.

 

6. What is the fee for downloading e-PAN card?

Ans. The applicant may download the e-PAN card without charge for the first month after the new or updated PAN card is issued. After that, each e-PAN card download would cost Rs. 8.26 for UTIITSL applicants.
