Restaurants and roadside stalls have increased in huge numbers in the years gone by and the business was booming. The arrival of the pandemic led to the closure of many businesses and stalls for lack of customers and non-compliance with the policies. It is thus important to know how to get the food license registration in India and how to go about it.

The FSSAI plays an important role in the monitoring of the safety and standard regulation that the food businesses need to comply with. There is a difference between getting registered and having an FSSAI license and one needs to understand the difference. This plays an important role when businesses want to get a food license online in India.

What is the FSSAI?

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is an organization that governs all the food-related businesses in India. FSSAI and FoSCos are two bodies that govern the business on the basis of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act). They look after the rules and regulations that are to be followed for food safety and regulation in India.

The  FSSAI and FoSCos together look after the food-related issues and make sure that the food products undergo quality checks. They help curb the adulteration and sale of sub-standard food products. They are responsible for the registration and licensing of Food Business Operators (FBO) in India. They also take care of FSSAI restaurant guidelines before granting a license.

What is the difference between FSSAI Registration and FSSAI License?

FSSAI Registration: This is a process that every food seller, no matter the revenue or size, has to apply for in order to conduct their business in India. FSSAI registration is for all kinds of petty food businesses operators for selling food to the public. Petty sellers are those who:
Produce and sell food by himself, or are hawkers, vendors or small stall owners.
Distribute food at religious or social events other than caterers.
Are businesses with a turnover of fewer than 12 lakhs.
Produce food less than 100 kg or liter per day.
Produce and handle milk collection of about 5000 liters.
Produce meat of 2 large animals or 10 small animals or 50 poultry birds per day basis.

FSSAI License: Any individual who does not qualify under the definition of a petty seller has to get themselves registered for an FSSAI License. For operating a food business in India there are two types of FSSAI license one can get themselves registered under. The type of license is dependent on the size of the operation and the annual revenue of the food business.

The State FSSAI License and Central FSSAI License are the two types of FSSAI license that a business can apply for. The large food manufacturers/processors/transporters and importers of food products are required to have a central FSSAI license. As for the state FSSAI license, it is for medium-sized food manufacturers, processors, and transporters.

The process for the FSSAI license is more detailed than an FSSAI registration online. The FSSAI license is issued for a period of 1 to 5 years as per the request by the food business. The fees are higher for a longer duration and lesser for a shorter duration of validity of the license. A shorter duration license needs to be newed as per the requirements.

The difference between the FSSAI license and the FSSAI registration lies in the use of the business. Both the categories differ according to the qualification that is applicable to the application process. While one is applicable for petty businesses with revenue below 12 lakhs, while the other is for businesses with revenue above 12 lakhs.

Conclusion

The FSSAI registration and FSSAI license are responsible for the monitoring of the production, processing, and supply in the food business. The FSSAI registration is the basic form of registration under the FSSAI and FoSCoS rules and regulations. While on the other hand, FSSAI License is for larger and medium businesses.
