Today, Meat Export is the source of income for five million households in India. With the demand for meat shooting up, the profit factor cannot be overlooked and they are reared mostly for export. Due to this reason, Goats and Sheep are part of a very important source of livestock in India. Along with maintaining supply in the domestic market, India is also capable enough to export globally. It is because a huge number of Indians are vegetarian and also few turning into vegan as a lifestyle change.

According to the Meat Traders Association, more than sixty countries import goat meat from India. Big importers are Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Angola and Egypt. Nearly 80% of the goat meat and mutton export is to West Asia. Although India’s current export of goat and sheep meat is 6.4 % of the production, export is where demand is set to explode. India has exported goat meat worth 90.77 USD Million during the FY 2019-20.

India ranks right after China in the world’s total goat population. Goat meat exporters from India are especially being nurtured under the umbrella of APEDA. By including goat and sheep meat under Scheduled products, APEDA has initiated the export growth of high-quality mutton in the international market.

Factors of Profit on Meat Exports

  1. This has been a slow but steady shift over the decades. Ecologically fragile areas handicapped small farmers from gaining returns in farming. So, they turned to goat rearing.
  2. Goat rearing does not need huge capital, hence easy to start. The easy availability of grazing ground for animals saves up to 70% of the production cost.
  3. With the ever-growing demand for processed and “ready to eat” foods, red meat and its various options are attracting consumers.

Licenses Required for Meat Export

The current scenario of worldwide demand is opening up new ways for goat meat exporters. As per the Indian Govt. the following licenses are required for international export:

  • Any exporter is required to get an APEDA license if they’re exporting scheduled products. It is like a seal of approval from the Govt. regarding the standard of your product.
  • An Import Export Code is also needed while filing for an APEDA membership.
  •  For any food business, the manufacturer needs to get an FSSAI Registration.
