FASTag has made toll payments significantly easier and hassle-free! But when it comes to applying for it, checking your FASTag balance, or dealing with a failed recharge, things can get a bit complicated. Even a small mistake may leave your FASTag inactive or cause payment issues at the toll plaza. In today's blog, we will talk about FASTag online application & recharge so that you can avoid common user issues.

What Is FASTag?

Did you see people at toll plazas sticking an RFID tag on their vehicle's windshield & moving ahead?

Well, that's how they pay highway toll taxes automatically without stopping for cash!

Isn't that smart?

In a nutshell, FASTag is a reloadable electronic sticker placed on a vehicle's windshield. Individuals use it to pay highway toll fees automatically.

How Does FASTag Work at Toll Plazas?

With FASTag, all you need to do is simply drive into the designated FASTag lane at the toll plaza. Next, the overhead scanner reads the RFID chip on your windshield sticker. After that, the system automatically deducts the toll amount directly from your linked account. After the payment deduction, the barrier automatically lifts so that you can drive through.

How are Toll Payments Deducted?

FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification technology to track, identify, and communicate data with the reading device. Once you drive into the designated lane, the antenna at the toll booth reads the chip inside the sticker. After that, the system deducts the toll money straight from your linked prepaid, savings or current account, as applicable.

How to Apply for FASTag Online?

Applying for a FASTag online is very easy. You can do so through authorised banks by submitting your vehicle details and completing a digital KYC process. In the following sections, we will discuss the required documents and the online application process.

However, before we do so, let us clarify one thing!

When applying for FASTag, the tag is issued for a specific vehicle and is linked to the applicable vehicle and customer/account details according to the issuer's process. However, the exact KYC, vehicle-mapping and activation steps may vary by issuing bank.

However, FASTag registration refers to formally linking it to your specific vehicle and bank or wallet. Now, to make the linked account ready-to-pay and functional, you need to activate & recharge it.

Documents Required for FASTag Registration

So, let's start with the documents you need to apply for FASTag.

Commonly required documents may include:

  1. The front and back copies of your vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
  2. PAN or other applicable KYC document
  3. Your identity and address proof (e.g., Aadhaar card, voter ID, or Driving License)
  4. Passport-size photograph, where applicable

Step-by-Step FASTag Application Process

Now, to apply for FASTag online, you may follow the steps below:

  • Visit the official website or mobile app of an authorised issuing bank of your choice
  • Verify your mobile number using the generated OTP
  • Next, provide your personal details, address, and vehicle registration number
  • Upload scanned copies/photos of your PAN and RC
  • After that, pay the applicable tag issuance fee, security deposit and recharge amount, as applicable.

Once the application is processed, the FASTag may be delivered or made available as per the issuer's process.

How to Register Your FASTag to Your Specific Vehicle?

The documents and steps for linking a FASTag to a vehicle may vary by issuing bank.

Common requirements may include:

  1. A copy of your vehicle RC
  2. Its registration number
  3. Engine/chassis numbers
  4. Clear photos of your car

Note: When taking pictures of your car, try to capture the front view with the license plate and the FASTag stuck on the front windshield.

Now, to link your FASTag with your bank account, follow the steps below:

  • Start by opening your bank's official FASTag customer portal or mobile application
  • Navigate to the FASTag Services or Manage FASTag section
  • Next, select the option to link or activate a new tag
  • Type in your exact vehicle registration number, tag ID, or barcode number printed on the sticker
  • Next, upload the scanned copies of your vehicle's RC and the pictures of your car displaying the affixed tag
  • Now, carefully review all the entered details and click on Submit

What to Expect Next?

The bank will verify your uploaded documents. If everything is correct, the bank will link your FASTag to your car’s RC and chassis details. Also, the issuer will update the FASTag and vehicle-related records as required under the applicable process.

How to Activate Your FASTag?

Now, FASTag registration only helps you link your bank account to it. Once your FASTag is issued, properly linked and active with sufficient balance, toll charges can be deducted electronically at applicable toll plazas.

Follow these steps to do so:

  • If you have already purchased your FASTag, open the My FASTag app
  • You may also open your bank's official app
  • Next, enter your vehicle RC and chassis number
  • Scan the tag's QR code, or you may also enter the FASTag ID
  • Now, link or maintain the applicable payment account or prepaid wallet as required by your issuer.
  • Pay the initial security deposit or recharge to maintain a minimum balance amount

Now you may use the VAHAN/Parivahan portal to check applicable vehicle registration details.

How to Check FASTag Balance and Status?

Checking your FASTag balance and status regularly is crucial to avoid highway delays, doubled toll charges, and unexpected fines.

But how?

5 Ways to Check Your FASTag Balance

  1. Use the MyFASTag app, where available, to check your FASTag status and related details. [Green: Active/Sufficient balance; Orange: Low balance; Red: Blacklisted (will discuss it later)]
  2. Visit the NPCI NETC FASTag Status page and enter your vehicle's registration number/FASTag ID to check the status.
  3. Log in to your specific issuer bank portal to check FASTag balances.
  4. For highway toll support & balance enquiries offline, contact the applicable FASTag/NHAI toll support channel, including 1033 where applicable.
  5. Also, specific eligible banking apps (e.g., ICICI) let you view the FASTag balance. For that, you need to log in to them with your credentials.

What Are the FASTag Charges?

The charges typically include a one-time issuance fee, a refundable security deposit, and an initial/threshold deposit.

Tag Issuance/Activation Charges

This refers to the one-time payment of a fee when you purchase it, and the tag issuance fee varies by issuer and applicable vehicle class.

Security Deposit

This is the amount kept by the bank, which may vary depending on the class of vehicle.

Initial/Threshold Deposit

This is the starting balance loaded into your wallet for highway toll payments.

Recharge and Applicable Convenience Charges

Toll plazas usually deduct a variable amount depending on your vehicle class or journey type (single or return). However, UPI and net banking payments are usually free, though a small fee may sometimes apply. But credit or debit card top-ups may incur small gateway fees.

How to Fix Common FASTag Problems?

Individuals may face FASTag problems leading to transaction rejections, scanner failures, and unexpected blacklisting at toll plazas. Below, we have discussed the possible solutions to the most common FASTag issues faced by users.

FASTag Not Working at Toll Plaza

In such scenarios, you can do three things:

  1. First of all, paste the tag properly on the front windshield
  2. Make sure it's not peeling off
  3. Clean off the dust gathered on the barcode & RFID chip

Also, if you find them wearing out, try to pay cash at the booth. Later, you may request a tag replacement from your issuing bank.

Recharge Successful; But Balance Not Updated

Most users have faced a similar situation more than once. So, if you face such an issue, do not panic!

Instead, do the things mentioned below:

  • Wait for 15 to 30 minutes (sometimes, server sync delays)
  • Close and reopen your bank's FASTag portal or mobile app & refresh
  • Check your SMS inbox for the bank's official payment confirmation receipt.

Within the next few hours, you should find the updated balance. If not, you may raise a complaint with your bank's customer support using the transaction reference (UPI/UTR) number.

FASTag Blacklisted

It means the issuer or the system has temporarily blocked or deactivated your FASTag. As a result, it will not scan or deduct money at highway toll lanes. But the worst part is, you may be required to pay the applicable toll through another permitted payment method and may face additional charges, depending on the applicable rules.

So, what should you do?

Well, there are 3 things you can try:

  1. Top up your FASTag balance immediately
  2. Log in to your issuer portal and see if you need to upload pending KYC documents or vehicle photos
  3. Close any older or duplicate tags tied to your vehicle

FASTag Linked to the Wrong Vehicle

A FASTag linked to the wrong vehicle may result in incorrect toll deductions or other transaction issues and may lead to the tag being suspended or blacklisted under applicable rules.

Here are the things you should do to deal with such issues:

  • Connect with your bank support team and request a backend vehicle mapping correction
  • Submit a clear copy of your vehicle's RC and the tag ID
  • Obtain a written confirmation once they map the correct vehicle's RC to the tag.

However, the very first thing you should do is to stop using the incorrect tag immediately. Otherwise, you may have to pay further penalties.

Pay Toll Taxes The Smarter Way!

As a responsible Indian citizen, you are liable to pay toll revenues. However, long queues at toll plazas may frustrate passengers like you at times. Automatic scanning with FASTag lets your vehicle pass through lanes instantly. So, take a step ahead towards the new digitised India with FASTag registration and travel without interruption.

Frequently Asked Questions
